About the Event

The Signal Financial Federal Credit Union sponsors a platform for local artists and graduates of The Compass Atelier's Master Artist Program to display their visual artwork and be recognized among the community. Come by and see some amazing artwork, enjoy music, light refreshments, and complimentary beverages, as we acknowledge and celebrate artists in our DC community.

Susan Fitch Brown on her work:

"The common thread in all my work is the interplay of colors and color values whether the piece is a landscape, a still life, a portrait or an abstract. I’m interested in how colors can reduce or intensify each other, and how those harmonies or discords can affect the sense of story or rhythm of the work. I like to explore how colors can work together and/or how they can collide in a way that creates harmony in the rest of the piece. Currently I’m working on the way mark-making can affect color."

Susan is joined in the exhibit by her colleague, Deborah Pollack, who describes her work process:

"I'm fascinated by the tacit power of openings.  Doors, windows, natural arches, and alleyways beckon me to wonder what lies beyond what I can easily see- beyond the obvious.  There’s something unexplored on the other side, a potential that can only be initially sensed.  I try to capture that latent force in my paintings.  So many of these “gateway” scenes are from my travels.  Travel is like a portal; it opens a door to learn about another’s culture, story, and land.  Passing through those experiences (first living through them, then painting them) changes me in ways that expand my preconceptions, and coaxes me to my next portal."

The "Art in the City" exhibit runs through October 30.
