About

Women Artists of the DMV is the first-ever survey of female visual artists from the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia, or the Greater Washington, DC metro area). The exhibition will be hosted in 18 major art spaces around the region and feature the work of more than 400 female artists.

The Washington, DC metro area (aka the DMV) is not only home to some of the best art museums in the world, but to many commercial art galleries, non-profit art spaces, alternative art venues, and art organizations, which together support one of the most vibrant and flourishing visual art scenes in the nation.

To celebrate this wealth of creativity, DC-area curator, artist, and arts activist Florencio Lennox Campello proposed in 2023 to curate an exhibition of 100-150 works by women artists at all career stages who represent the tens of thousands of women artists working in this culturally and ethnically diverse region.

In late 2024, the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center in DC and five other DMV art venues agreed to co-stage the show, which will kick off in late August 2025 and run for 6-12 weeks. Since then, the Women Artists of the DMV exhibition has continued to grow and now will showcase the work of over 400 artists at 18 different venues in Virginia, Maryland, and DC.
